Preparing to meet with a financial advisor

Today’s the day when we must complete the most adulting chore of them all – filing our income taxes. It’s also a good reminder to think about your financial life and meet with a financial advisor to consider investment strategies. Here are some steps to take to make your meeting run smoothly. (We also recommend reading “How To Be A Rich Old Lady” by Amanda Holden.)

  • Get recommendations for a financial advisor from friends or look online through CFP Board at letsmakeaplan.org

  • Set up an appointment

  • Set up a purpose for your meeting, whether it’s improving your retirement funding or planning a big goal, such as buying a house

  • Prepare questions

  • If meeting online, make sure you have your accounts ready for advisor to view

  • If meeting in person, bring copies of your account statements

  • Documents to have ready – bank statements, pay stubs, income tax returns, retirement accounts, and any debts and loans

  • As the meeting ends, write down the next steps and put them into action
